Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has urged lawyers to see themselves first and foremost as “facilitators of justice” and to place ethics at the heart of their profession.
Speaking on Saturday at the Vishnupant Advant lecture series on “The Present and Future of Law Business: Opportunities and Challenges,” Justice Chandrachud told law students that there are no shortcuts to success and encouraged them to be lifelong learners and independent thinkers.
“There is a need for lawyers to reorient their identity as facilitators of justice above all else. Seek guidance, but keep your thinking independent,” he said, adding that ethics must remain paramount and that compassion for the underprivileged should guide their work.
He emphasised that honest effort and continuous learning could unlock vast opportunities in the legal field. He also called for greater participation of women in law, noting that they are increasingly entering specialised and technical professions.
Justice Chandrachud highlighted the achievements of students from small towns and rural areas, crediting law colleges for their role in this success. He urged institutions to provide advanced facilities such as libraries and legal databases, and appealed to senior lawyers to offer financial support to young practitioners during their early careers.
