Srinagar: The Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch Kashmir has secured the conviction of former Sub-Inspector Jagdesh Singh for falsifying his date of birth in official records to unlawfully extend his service tenure by two years.
A Srinagar court sentenced Singh to three years of simple imprisonment and imposed fines for offences related to fraud and forgery.
According to an official statement, Singh, son of Kartar Singh and a resident of Atina, Budgam, was convicted in connection with FIR No. 32/2013, registered under Sections 420, 468, 471, and 201 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).
The case originated from a communication received from the Police Headquarters (PHQ) J&K, which revealed that Singh had altered his year of birth from 1957 to 1959 in official documents to unlawfully prolong his police service. The investigation found that he had fraudulently changed his date of birth to November 10, 1959, in his service records, including his Character Roll and matriculation certificate, to obtain undue service benefits.
During the trial, the Economic Offences Wing presented multiple witnesses and substantial documentary evidence proving Singh’s involvement in the offence. After a detailed examination, the Hon’ble City Judge, Srinagar, found him guilty under Sections 420, 511, and 468 RPC.
The court awarded Singh three years of simple imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000 under Section 420 read with 511 RPC, and another three years of simple imprisonment with a fine of ₹5,000 under Section 468 RPC. In case of default in payment of the fine, he will undergo an additional six months of simple imprisonment. All sentences will run concurrently.
The Economic Offences Wing reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that fraud, forgery, and corruption—regardless of an individual’s rank or position—are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
