Imphal: Director Lakshmipriya Devi’s critically acclaimed Manipur-based film Boong is set for a theatrical release following its recognition at prestigious international film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival, Asia Pacific Screen Awards, and the International South Asian Film Festival 2024.
Produced with the backing of Farhan Akhtar, Boong will hit theatres on September 19, 2025.
The coming-of-age story follows a young Manipuri boy, Boong, who embarks on a heartfelt quest to surprise his mother with a special gift. He believes that bringing his father back home would be the ultimate present, but his journey leads to an unexpected discovery and a new beginning.
Gugun Kipgen plays the lead role, supported by Vikram Kochhar, Bala Hijam, Hamom Sadananda, and Jenny Khurai in key roles.
Excel Movies, the official distributor and production house, announced the film’s release date on Instagram on Wednesday, alongside a poster highlighting the global acclaim Boong has received at international festivals in 2024-25.
The film was showcased at the International South Asian Film Festival in Canada (2024), the Toronto International Film Festival (2025), Asia Pacific Screen Awards (2024), Berkshire International Film Festival (2024), Indogerman Film Week, and other notable events.
“Come and say hello to Boong. Releasing in select cinemas on 19th September 2025,” shared Excel Movies, co-founded by Farhan Akhtar, on Instagram.
Child actor Gugun Kipgen also earned a special mention at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) for his performance in Boong.
The jury of the International South Asian Film Festival in Canada praised the film, stating: “The story of ‘Boong’ resonates with powerful realism, beautifully conveyed through the eyes of innocence and mischief. It’s a wholesome yet poignant experience, taking the audience on a heartfelt journey that lingers in the mind.”
Boong was also awarded the ‘Excellence in Feature Filmmaking’ prize at the festival.
