First Freight Train Carrying Industrial Salt from Gujarat Reaches Kashmir

JAMMU: In a significant development for freight transportation in Jammu and Kashmir, the first 21-wagon consignment of industrial salt from Gujarat arrived in south Kashmir on Friday, officials said.

The train, loaded with 1,350 tonnes of industrial salt from Kharaghoda Goods Shed in Gujarat, reached the Anantnag goods shed — marking a major milestone for the Jammu Division of Northern Railway.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal, said, “The Jammu Division of Northern Railway today received its first 21-wagon consignment of industrial salt from Gujarat at the Anantnag goods shed in Kashmir.”

The industrial salt is primarily used in tanning, pulp, soap, and brick kiln industries.

Officials noted that this new freight linkage will ensure a steady supply of essential commodities to the Valley, reduce transportation costs and travel time, and minimize dependence on road transport — particularly during harsh weather when highways remain affected.

In recent months, the Kashmir Valley has seen a steady increase in freight movement, including the transport of apples to Delhi and the delivery of Maruti vehicles and other goods to the region.

Singhal added that the successful arrival of the salt consignment is expected to encourage more such freight operations, strengthening trade ties between Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir.

“With such initiatives, Indian Railways continues to expand its logistics network across the Union Territory, ensuring the smooth and efficient movement of essential and commercial goods for industries and the public alike,” an official said.
