Peshawar: Torrential rains, floods, and cloudbursts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have caused government infrastructure losses estimated at Rs 20 billion, an official report revealed Thursday.

The province has been the hardest hit in the country, with the death toll rising to 380 since August 15.

The Communication and Works (C&W) Department submitted its preliminary damage assessment to Chief Minister Amin Ali Gandapur earlier in the day. According to the report, 603 government properties across 20 departments sustained damage. Battagram was the worst affected district with 214 properties destroyed, followed by Swat (97), Bajaur (65), and Mansehra (58).

Among the destroyed infrastructure were 37 schools, 83 roads, and 10 bridges. Irrigation systems were particularly hard hit, with 226 channels and 68 water supply schemes rendered non-functional. The Irrigation Department alone reported losses exceeding Rs 10.3 billion.

Other affected departments included the C&W Department (Rs 3.4 billion), the Education Department (Rs 1.4 billion), and the Public Health Engineering Department (Rs 21.7 million).

At the national level, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that 750 people—457 men, 113 women, and 180 children—have died in monsoon-related incidents since June 26, while another 978 were injured.

KP accounted for the highest fatalities at 447, followed by Punjab (165), Sindh (40), Balochistan (23), Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (67), and the Islamabad Capital Territory (8), the NDMA added.
