Brussels: Belgian gymnast and Olympic champion Nina Derwael has announced her retirement from the sport, her national federation confirmed on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old, who claimed gold on the uneven bars at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, made the decision following a successful outing at the European Championships in June, where she secured two more titles.
“Winning double gold at the European Championships a month and a half ago was the final highlight of her long and highly decorated gymnastics career—the ideal moment to step away,” the federation said.
Derwael’s career includes multiple medals at major international events, including back-to-back world titles on the uneven bars in 2018 and 2019.
“I’ve achieved everything I set out to do. I’ve proven my capabilities,” Derwael said. “Lately, I kept wondering—haven’t I done enough? Is it worth continuing to push my body? In the end, I realised it’s time.”
