Poonch/Jammu: Four landmines and a mortar shell exploded near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, causing no casualties, officials said on Thursday.

According to officials, the mortar shell, buried underground, detonated when an earthmover was digging at Sagra village in the Mankote area on Thursday morning. The excavator driver escaped unhurt, though the blast shook the locality.

A police team rushed to the spot to investigate the incident. Officials said the mortar shell was likely an unexploded remnant from earlier cross-border shelling.

In a separate incident on Wednesday, four landmines went off in the Balakote area after being safely detonated by a bomb disposal squad. The explosives had been displaced from the anti-infiltration obstacle system due to recent heavy rains, officials added.

No damage or injuries were reported in either incident.
