SRINAGAR, Dec 4: The cold wave has intensified across the Kashmir Valley with temperatures dipping sharply, leaving residents grappling with freezing conditions. Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4 degrees Celsius, marking one of the coldest nights of the season so far.

According to the Meteorological Department, the mercury has fallen below normal levels in most districts, with severe frost reported in the mornings. The drop in temperature has led to frozen water pipes, icy roads, and difficulties in daily life, particularly for those in rural and hilly areas. Dal Lake and other water bodies in Srinagar were seen partially frozen, a familiar sight during peak winter.

Officials said that Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and other tourist destinations also witnessed sub-zero temperatures, drawing visitors eager to experience snowfall and winter landscapes. However, the biting cold has added to the hardships of locals, especially those without adequate heating arrangements.

Residents reported that early morning routines have become challenging, with frozen taps and slippery streets posing risks. Street vendors and shopkeepers said business has slowed as fewer people venture out in the freezing conditions. Health experts have advised people to take precautions against cold-related ailments, particularly respiratory issues.

The Meteorological Department has forecast that the cold wave is likely to continue in the coming days, with night temperatures expected to remain below freezing. Authorities have urged people to stay warm and exercise caution while travelling on icy roads.

The intensifying cold wave has once again highlighted the harsh realities of winter in Kashmir, where beauty and hardship coexist, and where resilience remains the hallmark of daily life.
