NEW DELHI: The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB), the government’s headhunter for top positions in state-owned banks and financial institutions, has recommended Ravi Ranjan for the role of Managing Director (MD) at State Bank of India (SBI).

Ranjan, who currently serves as Deputy Managing Director, is expected to succeed Vinay M Tonse, whose term ends on November 30, 2025.

FSIB conducted interviews of nine candidates for the SBI MD position on September 11, 2025. In a statement, the Bureau said, “Considering their performance during the interface, overall experience, and existing parameters, the Bureau recommends Ravi Ranjan for the position of MD in SBI.”

SBI’s board is chaired by the Chairman and assisted by four managing directors. The final decision on FSIB’s recommendation rests with the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

FSIB is led by Bhanu Pratap Sharma, former Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Other members include Animesh Chauhan, former Chairman and MD of the erstwhile Oriental Bank of Commerce; Deepak Singhal, former Executive Director at the RBI; and Shailendra Bhandari, former MD of the erstwhile ING Vysya Bank.
