New Delhi: Futsal in India may still be in its early stages, but the sport is steadily gaining ground. This year’s AIFF Futsal Club Championship saw participation from 17 teams, underlining its gradual growth.

Two years ago, the Indian men’s futsal national team made their debut in the Asian qualifiers in Tajikistan. Now, they are set to return for the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers, scheduled from September 20 to 24 in Kuwait, according to the AIFF.

Following a talent hunt at the Futsal Club Championship in Rudrapur, the best players were selected for a 20-day training camp in Bengaluru to prepare for the continental challenge. Newly appointed head coach Reza Kordi, an Iranian with vast futsal coaching experience across Qatar, Kuwait, Myanmar, Thailand, Afghanistan, and Iran, has been leading the preparations.

“I am grateful to the All India Football Federation for this opportunity,” said Kordi. “India has huge potential, and this is the right moment to build a strong team culture. The difference with other countries is mainly in knowledge and experience. Indian players are quick, intelligent, and mentally strong—they just need more exposure. With the right system and regular competition, India can aim for a top-four spot in Asia.”

India have been drawn into Group A of the qualifiers, where they will face hosts Kuwait (September 20), Australia (September 22), and Mongolia (September 24). The group winners and the seven best second-placed teams across eight groups will join hosts Indonesia in next year’s final tournament.

Looking ahead, Kordi is optimistic: “Our opponents have been preparing longer, which could be a challenge, but we are not dwelling on that. We have quality players, strong support from the Federation, and everyone is working hard in Bengaluru. With this effort, I believe India have a very good chance to qualify.”

As part of their build-up, India will also play a series of friendlies, with details to be announced soon.
