JAMMU: The Science Club, in collaboration with the Department of Botany and the Eco Club at Government College for Women, Parade Ground Jammu, celebrated International Ozone Day to mark the signing of the Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substances.

The event was conducted under the guidance of Principal Dr. Ravender Kumar Tickoo. This year’s theme, “From Science to Global Action,” highlighted how scientific understanding of ozone depletion has driven worldwide efforts to protect the ozone layer, emphasizing the ongoing need for scientific monitoring and international cooperation.

The program began with a pledge, where students and faculty committed to preserving the ozone layer by promoting the use of ozone-friendly products and practices. It was followed by a poster-making competition, with participation from students across various streams. The participants creatively expressed their ideas on ozone conservation through vibrant and thought-provoking posters.

Prof. Aasia Rashid Bhat, convener of the Science Club, delivered the welcome address and underscored the importance of raising awareness about ozone layer protection. The posters were evaluated by a panel of judges, including Prof. Anjali Abrol (Department of Chemistry) and Prof. Bindu Kumari (Department of Botany), who also shared insights on ozone depletion and encouraged participants to adopt ozone-friendly habits.

The event provided a meaningful platform for students to explore, appreciate, and express their ideas on safeguarding the ozone layer. It concluded with the distribution of prizes to the first, second, and third-place winners. The Science Club Committee members — Dr. Harmanmeet Kour, Dr. Sarita Parihar, Dr. Usha Devi, Dr. Pervaiz Ahmed, and Dr. Manjulla Gupta — played an active role in organizing the program.
