NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said India’s ability to withstand external shocks remains strong even as the global economy undergoes a structural transformation.

Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave 2025 on the theme “Seeking Prosperity in Turbulent Times”, Sitharaman stressed that nations must not only manage uncertainty but also confront deepening trade, financial, and energy imbalances.

“Geopolitical conflicts are intensifying. Sanctions, tariffs, and decoupling strategies are reshaping global supply chains. For India, these dynamics highlight both vulnerability and resilience. Our capacity to absorb shocks is strong, while our economic leverage is evolving. The choices we make will determine whether resilience becomes a platform for leadership or merely a shield against uncertainty,” she said.

Highlighting the shifts in global alignments, Sitharaman noted that wars and strategic rivalries are redrawing boundaries of cooperation and conflict. “Alliances that once appeared solid are being tested, and new coalitions are emerging. What we face is not a temporary disruption but a structural transformation,” she remarked.

Underscoring India’s domestic strength, the finance minister said the economy remains resilient and continues to grow sustainably. The steady share of consumption and investment in GDP, she explained, anchors growth in domestic factors, thereby reducing the impact of external shocks.

“India’s rise as a stabilising force is neither accidental nor transient; it stems from a powerful combination of factors,” Sitharaman added.
