Srinagar: Authorities in Kashmir have directed all staff and students at Government Medical College (GMC) and SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, to identify and label their personal lockers following the recent recovery of arms and ammunition from a doctor’s locker at GMC Anantnag, officials said on Tuesday.
A circular issued by the Administrator, Associated Hospitals, Srinagar, stated that all faculty members, heads of departments, paramedical staff, and students must “personally identify their lockers and label them with their name, designation, and code.”
The directive comes after a November 8 incident in which arms and ammunition were recovered from a locker belonging to a doctor at GMC Anantnag.
According to the circular, the labeling exercise must be completed by November 14, after which the Medical Superintendent of SMHS Hospital, Resident Medical Officers of each floor, and the Estates-cum-Transport Officer of GMC Srinagar will conduct inspections to identify and remove unclaimed or surplus lockers occupying space in hospital and college corridors.
“No employee will be allowed to claim any locker that remains unidentified after the specified period,” the order warned.
It also directed section officers, estate officers, and the accounts section not to issue any Last Pay Certificate (LPC), No Objection Certificate (NOC), or service book at the time of transfer until the concerned employee’s locker is officially handed over.
Meanwhile, GMC Anantnag has issued a similar circular, instructing all heads of departments to “identify the lockers or almirahs in their respective departments and ensure that the names of the allotted staff are clearly displayed.” Any unclaimed lockers or almirahs must be reported to the administration.
The development follows the arrest of Dr. Adil Ahmed, a resident of Anantnag, from whose locker the arms were recovered. Police said he was detained for allegedly putting up posters supporting the banned outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed in Srinagar.
Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Vyom Bindal confirmed that the accused, who had been working at a private hospital in Saharanpur, was taken into custody in connection with a case registered in Srinagar.
