New Delhi: Gold prices surged sharply by Rs 9,700 on Monday, reaching a new peak of Rs 1,30,300 per 10 grams in the national capital, driven by safe-haven buying in international markets and a weakening rupee.

The All India Sarafa Association reported that 99.9% purity gold had closed at Rs 1,20,600 per 10 grams on Friday.

In the local bullion market, 99.5% purity gold jumped by Rs 2,700 to a record high of Rs 1,22,700 per 10 grams (including all taxes), up from Rs 1,20,000 per 10 grams in the previous session.

Silver also saw significant gains, rising Rs 7,400 to a fresh peak of Rs 1,57,400 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes), after closing at Rs 1,50,000 per kg on Friday.

On international markets, spot gold climbed nearly 2% to an all-time high of USD 3,949.58 per ounce, while silver gained over 1% to reach USD 48.75 per ounce.
