NEW DELHI: Gold seizures by enforcement agencies fell sharply to 2,600 kg across 3,005 cases in 2024-25, less than half of the 4,972 kg seized in 6,599 smuggling cases during 2023-24, Parliament was informed on Monday.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary shared data on gold imports and seizures over the past decade. Gold seizures stood at 4,343 kg in FY23, 2,172 kg in FY22, and 1,944 kg in FY21.
On the import front, India brought in gold worth USD 58 billion in 2024, up from USD 42.58 billion in 2023, USD 36.59 billion in 2022, and USD 55.78 billion in 2021.
Switzerland and the UAE remained the top sources of imports in 2024, contributing USD 21.49 billion and USD 12.93 billion, respectively. Imports from South Africa and Peru were valued at USD 5.21 billion and USD 4.37 billion.
