Google Warns 2.5 Billion Gmail Users of Rising Hacking Threats

Google has issued a major warning affecting over 2.5 billion Gmail users after detecting a surge in hacking attempts. A notorious group called ShinyHunters, known for high-profile data breaches over the past few years, has been targeting users through phishing campaigns—making Gmail a prime target.

Google is urging users to take immediate action to protect their accounts. This includes updating passwords and enabling two-factor authentication (2FA), which adds an extra layer of security even if a password is compromised.

The hackers typically send emails that prompt urgent action or pique curiosity. Once a victim clicks a malicious link or opens an attachment, the attackers gain a foothold in the system. 2FA, via SMS verification or an authenticator app generating dynamic one-time codes, can block such access.

While Google has already alerted millions of users, the company emphasizes that all Gmail users should adopt these security measures to protect sensitive accounts, including those for banking and online shopping.

The warning also highlights the emergence of AI-powered attacks, which can manipulate users and potentially control their digital lives. These attacks may appear sophisticated, but methods remain deceptively simple—such as phone calls impersonating Google support representatives, often followed by a convincing email to avoid suspicion.

By taking these precautions, users can safeguard their Gmail accounts against both traditional and AI-driven threats.
