New Delhi: The government on Monday extended the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2025-26 by one day to September 16, after technical glitches disrupted last-day filings.

According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), over 7.3 crore ITRs were filed by September 15, surpassing last year’s record of 7.28 crore.

“To facilitate further filings, the due date has been extended by one day (16th September 2025),” the CBDT said in a post on X.

The e-filing portal saw heavy traffic on Monday, which was also the last date for paying the second quarterly instalment of advance tax for FY 2024-25. Late in the evening, the Income Tax Department issued a guide to resolve browser-related issues, though many taxpayers continued facing glitches.

Several users, including chartered accountants, reported problems such as logging in, making tax payments, and downloading the Annual Information Statement (AIS). Responding to complaints, the department maintained that the portal was functioning normally and advised clearing browser cache or using alternative browsers. It also asked users to share details, along with PAN and contact numbers, via official support emails.

Earlier, on September 14, the department had clarified that the AIS/TIS facility was operational and requested affected taxpayers to share technical details if issues persisted.

This year, the original July 31 deadline for individuals, HUFs, and non-audit entities was first extended to September 15, owing to revisions in ITR forms and related utility updates. On September 15, the deadline was further pushed to September 16.

The CBDT also announced that the e-filing portal would undergo maintenance from 12 am to 2:30 am on September 16.

ITR filings have been steadily rising, reflecting greater compliance and a broader tax base. For AY 2024-25, a record 7.28 crore returns were filed by July 31, up 7.5% from 6.77 crore in AY 2023-24.
