NEW DELHI: The government has extended the tenure of Gurdeep Singh as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC by one year, according to an official notification.

Singh, who was set to retire on July 31, will now continue to lead the country’s largest power producer until July 31, 2026. NTPC operates under the Ministry of Power.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the Ministry of Power’s proposal for Singh’s re-employment on a contract basis for one year beyond his scheduled retirement date, from August 1, 2025, to July 31, 2026, the Department of Personnel & Training stated.

In May, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) had interviewed a dozen candidates — including several serving directors of NTPC and other state-run companies — but found none suitable for the top post, highlighting the government’s ongoing struggle to identify qualified leaders for key PSU roles.
