New Delhi, Dec 02: The government has taken several revolutionary steps in the cooperative sector over the past four years to strengthen the rural economy. Replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol said that the Modi government has established the Ministry of Cooperation to give new energy and direction to cooperative societies across the country.
Murlidhar Mohol informed the House that there are nearly eight lakh cooperative societies functioning nationwide, with around 30 crore people directly associated as members. He emphasized that cooperatives have become a vital pillar of India’s rural economy, enabling farmers, workers, and communities to access resources and opportunities.
Highlighting the scale of participation, Mohol said that today, 50 percent of the country’s population is connected with cooperatives in some form. He noted that this reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and its vision of empowering rural households through collective strength.
Officials added that the Ministry of Cooperation is working to modernize cooperative structures, improve transparency, and expand their reach in sectors such as agriculture, banking, and rural development. The reforms are aimed at ensuring that cooperatives continue to play a transformative role in India’s economic progress.
