NEW DELHI: The Government today stated that the availability of fertilisers during the ongoing Kharif season remains comfortable, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring timely and equitable supply of crop nutrients to farmers.

According to an official statement from the Department of Fertilizers, total urea availability stands at 183 lakh tonnes against a pro-rata requirement of 143 lakh tonnes. Urea sales have already reached 155 lakh tonnes, 13 lakh tonnes higher than the same period last year.

For DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate), availability is 49 lakh tonnes against a pro-rata requirement of 45 lakh tonnes, with 33 lakh tonnes sold so far. NPK fertilisers have an availability of 97 lakh tonnes against a requirement of 58 lakh tonnes, with 64.5 lakh tonnes already sold.

The Department noted that these supplies have been maintained despite global disruptions affecting both availability and prices. “Timely diplomatic engagements, logistical interventions, and long-term arrangements have ensured that farmers do not face scarcity,” the statement added.

A consortium of Indian fertiliser companies has secured 25 lakh tonnes of DAP and TSP from Morocco. Additionally, in July 2025, a Long-Term Agreement was signed with Saudi Arabia for the annual supply of 31 lakh tonnes of DAP over five years, starting from 2025-26.

The Department highlighted that the ongoing Red Sea crisis has disrupted shipments, requiring re-routing via the Cape of Good Hope, adding over 6,500 km to the journey and extending transit times, particularly for DAP. Global conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in the Middle East, have also driven up international fertiliser prices.

Domestically, urea production has risen from 227.15 lakh tonnes in 2013-14 to 306.67 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. Production of DAP and NPK fertilisers combined has grown 44% over the same period, reaching 158.78 lakh tonnes from 110.09 lakh tonnes.

To protect farmers from rising international prices, the Government provides substantial subsidies. Urea is sold at a statutory MRP of Rs 242 per 45 kg bag (excluding neem coating and taxes). DAP is made available to farmers at Rs 1,350 per bag under a special government package covering both imported and indigenous supplies.

“The Government of India remains committed to ensuring the timely and equitable availability of fertilisers to all farmers,” the Department affirmed.
