New Delhi, Dec 02: The Government of India has invited proposals for setting up food testing laboratories and irradiation units across the country, in a major push to strengthen food safety and quality standards. The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, is part of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY).

Joint Secretary in the Ministry, Ranjit Singh, told Akashvani News that a financial outlay of ₹500 crore has been allocated to support the establishment of 100 NABL-accredited food testing labs nationwide. He said the move will ensure that food products meet global standards while safeguarding consumer health.

In addition to testing labs, the government has also invited proposals for setting up multi-product food irradiation units under the Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure scheme of PMKSY. These units will help extend shelf life, reduce wastage, and improve food safety.

Officials confirmed that applications must be submitted online through the portal www.sampada-mofpi.gov.in, with the deadline set for January 20, 2026. A pre-bid meeting was held on December 2 to guide stakeholders on the submission process.

Industry experts welcomed the initiative, noting that improved food testing and irradiation facilities will boost consumer confidence and open new opportunities for exports. The government reiterated its commitment to building a robust food safety ecosystem across India.
