New Delhi: The government on Wednesday classified the car blast outside the Red Fort as a “terrorist incident” and instructed investigating agencies to handle the probe with “utmost urgency and professionalism” to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.
At a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his return from Bhutan, the government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. The Cabinet observed a two-minute silence for the victims and passed a resolution expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives, noting that the situation is being closely monitored at the highest levels.
Soon after his return, the prime minister visited Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital to meet the injured and later chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security.
The developments follow Monday’s explosion of an explosives-laden car outside the Red Fort, which killed 12 people. On the same day, eight individuals — including three doctors — were arrested as an inter-state “white-collar” terror module was busted.
The Cabinet resolution called the blast a “senseless act of violence,” condemned the attack, and offered condolences to the bereaved families. It also wished a speedy recovery for the injured and praised the swift efforts of medical staff and emergency responders.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who read out the resolution, noted the Cabinet’s appreciation for the global messages of solidarity and support. The government also commended the coordinated response of authorities, security agencies, and citizens, lauding their courage and sense of duty.
Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the Cabinet said it remains determined to protect the lives and well-being of all citizens.
