New Delhi: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday urged the electronics industry to expand domestic manufacturing across the entire value chain to strengthen self-reliance and curb import dependence.
During a meeting with industry representatives and senior government officials, issues concerning exports in the mobile and electronics sectors were reviewed.
“The minister emphasized the importance of enhancing domestic capabilities throughout the electronics ecosystem, stressing that greater self-reliance in both finished goods and components is crucial to sustaining India’s export growth and cutting import dependence,” the commerce ministry said in a statement.
India’s electronic goods imports climbed nearly 17 per cent to USD 56.15 billion during April–September 2025, while exports jumped 42 per cent to USD 22.2 billion, up from USD 15.6 billion in the same period last year.
Smartphone exports alone surged 58 per cent, reaching USD 13.38 billion compared to USD 8.47 billion in April–September 2024.
The ministry added that ongoing free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with the EU, UK, and EFTA are expected to open new market opportunities for Indian electronics manufacturers.
Additionally, initiatives such as the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program are deepening domestic manufacturing and reducing import dependence.
The meeting also discussed India’s ambitious goal of achieving USD 180–200 billion in electronics exports by 2031.
