JAMMU: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted environmental clearance to the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project (HEP), paving the way for its implementation in Jammu and Kashmir. The project, located on the Chenab River in Ramban district, is designed to generate 1,856 MW of clean energy, making it one of the largest hydroelectric initiatives in the Union Territory.

Officials stated that the clearance was accorded after detailed appraisal of environmental impact assessments and mitigation measures. The project is expected to contribute significantly to India’s renewable energy targets while ensuring compliance with ecological safeguards.

The Sawalkote HEP will involve construction of a dam and associated infrastructure, with provisions for resettlement and rehabilitation of affected families. The Centre has emphasised that strict monitoring mechanisms will be put in place to minimise ecological disruption and safeguard biodiversity in the region.

The clearance marks a major milestone in harnessing the hydropower potential of Jammu and Kashmir, with the project anticipated to boost local employment, strengthen power supply, and support sustainable development goals.
