Bandipora, Dec 02: Forest officials, assisted by multiple agencies, continue to battle a massive forest fire in the Bagtore area near the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez valley. The blaze, which broke out in Forest Compartment 32, has entered its fifth day and destroyed large stretches of forest land.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Gurez, Altaf Hussain, said that joint teams of the Forest Department, Wildlife Department, Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and local volunteers have been working round the clock to contain the fire. Around 80 to 90 per cent of the blaze has been brought under control, though scattered patches are still burning across the slopes.
Range Officer Bagtore, Mohammad Yousuf, confirmed that the fire has inflicted severe damage on the fragile ecosystem of Gurez, known for its rich biodiversity and dense vegetation. He described the situation as high-risk due to the terrain and proximity to the LoC, which complicates firefighting operations.
Local residents, including community volunteers led by Abdul Rashid of Bagtore village, have joined the firefighting efforts alongside official teams. Their participation has been crucial in accessing remote areas and preventing flare-ups.
Authorities emphasized that efforts are continuing to douse the remaining flames and prevent fresh outbreaks. Surveillance has been intensified, and teams remain deployed until the fire is fully contained.
