United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has extended his condolences to the government and people of India over the Red Fort blast, calling for a thorough investigation into the incident, his Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said on Tuesday.

Responding to a question about the explosion near the Red Fort, Haq said at the daily UN briefing, “We send our condolences to the government and people of India for what has happened there, and that also needs to be fully investigated.”

Nine people were killed and at least 20 others injured when a car exploded near the Red Fort on Monday. The blast is being probed as an act of terrorism, with reports suggesting possible links to Jaish-e-Mohammed and a raid near Delhi that uncovered large amounts of explosive materials.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the authorities would “get to the bottom of this conspiracy” and ensure that “all those responsible will be brought to justice.”

Referring to the Red Fort incident as “what happened there,” Haq also addressed another bombing in Islamabad on Tuesday.

He said the Secretary-General was “deeply saddened” by the reported suicide attack in Pakistan’s capital, offering condolences to the victims’ families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

“The Secretary-General condemns acts of violence and terrorism in the strongest terms,” Haq added. “He reiterates that all perpetrators of terrorism must be held accountable and calls for a full investigation.”

Twelve people were killed and around 20 others injured in the Islamabad blast, which Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a faction of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), claimed responsibility for, according to media reports.
