Madurai, Dec 03: The Madras High Court has directed the Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple authorities to light the traditional ‘Karthigai Deepam’ atop the stone pillar on the sacred hill. The order comes in response to petitions seeking restoration of the age-old practice associated with the annual festival.

Justice G.R. Swaminathan observed that the lighting of the lamp on the stone pillar is integral to the religious and cultural traditions of the temple, and should be carried out in accordance with safety and administrative guidelines. The court emphasized that heritage practices must be preserved while ensuring public order.

Temple officials confirmed that arrangements are being made to comply with the directive. The Karthigai Deepam festival, celebrated in the Tamil month of Karthigai, is one of the most significant events at the Thirupparankundram shrine, drawing thousands of devotees from across the region.

Local devotees welcomed the court’s decision, noting that the lighting of the lamp on the stone pillar symbolizes divine illumination and has been a cherished tradition for generations. The administration assured that necessary precautions will be taken to manage crowds and ensure smooth conduct of the festival.

The directive is expected to reinforce the cultural sanctity of the Thirupparankundram hill, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan, and uphold the continuity of its historic rituals.
