Jammu: Heavy rains and flash floods have damaged around 500 houses in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, prompting ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts to restore essential supplies and road networks.
Deputy Commissioner Doda, Harvinder Singh, said on Monday, “Fifty houses have been completely destroyed, 100 severely damaged, and 350 partially damaged. Tragically, five people and 14 animals have lost their lives.”
Overseeing the relief operations, Singh added, “We have credited ₹4 lakh in compensation to each affected family.” The heavy rainfall from August 25 to 27 caused widespread destruction across the district.
“The administration has conducted door-to-door assessments to monitor the situation. Efforts are underway to restore normal life,” Singh noted. He also confirmed that fully damaged roads have been temporarily repaired, including the highway, Bhaderwah road, and PMGSY routes.
Acknowledging the scale of the losses, the DC said, “Recovery will take time. Funds received periodically or through special packages will be used for permanent restoration.”
Cautioning residents about forecasts of further rain on Tuesday, he urged, “Everyone should stay alert and avoid water bodies.”
