Chennai, November 30 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Cyclone Ditwah is expected to weaken into a deep depression by late Sunday night, remaining close to the coasts of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the cyclone was located about 90 km southeast of Cuddalore, 120 km northeast of Karaikal, 90 km southeast of Puducherry, 170 km northeast of Vedaranniyam, and 150 km southeast of Chennai. The system is very likely to move nearly northwards parallel to the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coasts.
Authorities have issued a yellow alert for Chennai and surrounding districts, with red and orange alerts in parts of Tamil Nadu warning of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Disaster response teams have been placed on standby.
Officials said continuous downpour has submerged paddy fields in several districts, raising concerns about crop damage. The Tamil Nadu government confirmed three rain-related deaths as the cyclone influenced weather conditions across the region.
IMD stated that the system will weaken into a deep depression by midnight Sunday, with further updates to be issued based on its movement and intensity.
