Chamba: Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district experienced another earthquake early Wednesday, registering a magnitude of 4.0 at 4:39 am, following an earlier tremor of magnitude 3.3 at 3:27 am.
The second quake occurred at 04:39:45 IST at a depth of 10 km. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS) on X:
“EQ of M: 4.0, On: 20/08/2025 04:39:45 IST, Lat: 32.71 N, Long: 76.11 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Chamba, Himachal Pradesh.”
The first tremor struck at 03:27:09 IST with a depth of 20 km. NCS reported:
“EQ of M: 3.3, On: 20/08/2025 03:27:09 IST, Lat: 32.87 N, Long: 76.09 E, Depth: 20 Km, Location: Chamba, Himachal Pradesh.”
Meanwhile, the aftermath of a recent cloudburst in Lagghati, Kullu, continues to cause disruption. Deputy Commissioner Torul S. Ravish reported:
- Damage to the road near Bhootnath Bridge
- Hanumani Bag bridge washed away
- One cremation ground affected
He added, “Two shops and two vegetable stalls have suffered losses, one house has been damaged, and the Ropdi Bhutthi Bridge has also been affected. All departments are assessing the extent of damage.”
The monsoon has inflicted widespread devastation across Himachal Pradesh, with the cumulative death toll rising to 276 since June 20, according to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) as of Tuesday evening.
The report also highlighted severe damage to property and livestock:
- 1,104 homes completely destroyed
- 37 shops and factories lost
- 2,416 cowsheds and rural structures damaged
- Over 27,552 livestock and poultry perished
