BHADERWAH: The annual three-day Mela Patt, dedicated to Lord Vasuki Nag, the presiding deity of Bhaderwah Valley, began today at the historic Khakhal Mohalla. Rooted in the region’s Nag culture, the festival commemorates the legendary meeting between Mughal Emperor Akbar and King Nag Pal of Bhaderwah and has been celebrated since the 16th century. This year, it continues to attract hundreds of visitors from across Jammu and Kashmir, cutting across caste and religious lines, to honor the bravery and spiritual legacy of Raja Nag Pal.

Originally observed by King Nag Pal when Bhaderwah was known as Bhadarkashi, Mela Patt holds a special place in the valley’s cultural and religious traditions. Celebrated every year on Nag Panchami, seven days after the conclusion of the Kailash Yatra, the festival is renowned for its inclusive spirit. A highlight is the ‘Dikko Dance’, a traditional folk performance involving men and women of all communities, symbolizing peace, pride, and communal harmony.

What sets Mela Patt apart is its 600-year-long history, free of any untoward incidents, reflecting the deep respect for Raja Nag Pal and the strong sense of unity in the region. Beyond its religious significance, the festival celebrates Bhaderwah’s rich historical legacy. The organizing committee of Mohalla Khakhal emphasized that this centuries-old event remains a living testament to brotherhood and cultural heritage.
