Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday urged political and social groups in Kashmir to unite for the release of prisoners, stressing that politicising such a humanitarian issue would be “shameful.”

In a post on X, Mirwaiz said, “Highlighting the plight of thousands of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in jails across J&K and India, and working for their relief and release, is the moral responsibility of all Kashmiris. A joint effort is the need of the hour if we truly want to help them.”

He appealed to political parties, social organisations, and civil society members to come together and work collectively for this cause.

Earlier, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to lead an all-party delegation to prisons across the country housing J&K inmates and take up the matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The PDP also held a protest in Srinagar demanding either the release of prisoners or their transfer to jails within the Union Territory.
