KIEV, : The International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi and Ukrainian Energy Minister German Halushchenko signed a memorandum on restoring Ukraine’s energy sector in Rome, the Ukrainian president’s office said.
“The Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Halushchenko and Rafael Grossi signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the IAEA and the Government of Ukraine on cooperation in supporting Ukraine’s restoration,” the statement read.
The memorandum identifies the IAEA as the guarantor of safety compliance during the construction of additional units at the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant and formalizes the UN atomic agency’s support for uranium extraction and fuel production in Ukraine, which was deemed essential for the country’s energy security.
Halushchenko said in 2024 that Ukraine had lost half of its electricity generation capacity. In February, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said it lacked 10 gigawatts of generation capacity.
