New Delhi: India is expected to receive above-normal rainfall in September, concluding a monsoon season already marked by several rain-related disasters across the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

According to the IMD, September 2025 rainfall is likely to surpass 109 per cent of the long-term average of 167.9 mm. While most regions are forecast to receive normal to above-normal rainfall, below-normal showers are expected in parts of the northeast, east, extreme southern peninsular India, and some pockets of northwest India.

Speaking at an online press conference, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra cautioned that heavy rain could trigger landslides and flash floods in Uttarakhand, besides disrupting life in south Haryana, Delhi, and north Rajasthan.

“Many rivers originate in Uttarakhand, and heavy rainfall will cause them to swell, affecting towns and cities downstream. This risk must be taken seriously,” he said.

He further noted that significant rainfall is also likely in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi river in Chhattisgarh.
