New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a red nowcast warning for heavy rainfall, exceeding 15 mm per hour, along with thunderstorms in several districts across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In Uttar Pradesh, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur, and Shahjahanpur were placed under a red alert, while in Haryana, the warning applied to Fatehabad, Jind, Hisar, Gurugram, Rewari, and Mewat. Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, Kangra, and Kullu, along with Punjab’s Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Moga, and Barnala, were also affected.
“Heavy spells (>15 mm/hr) with thunderstorms are likely in these districts. People are advised to take precautions and avoid vulnerable areas,” the IMD said.
An orange nowcast warning was also issued for moderate rainfall (5–15 mm per hour) with thunderstorms in parts of East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Leh, and north Chhattisgarh. The IMD warned that lightning and heavy rain could trigger local flooding, traffic disruptions, and damage to weak structures, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid waterlogged areas.
Meanwhile, Ambala district in Haryana has witnessed severe waterlogging after two days of continuous downpour. Localities such as Cloth Market and Nadi Mohalla have been badly affected, with residents reporting flooded homes and streets.
“Waterlogging has made potholes invisible, posing a risk to two-wheeler riders. Earlier, water would drain quickly, but now even houses are getting flooded,” said a resident. Another local shared that his belongings had been ruined by floodwaters, leaving him in distress.
