AHMEDABAD: India aims to be among the top five sporting nations in the world by 2047, the centenary of its independence, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Sunday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships here, Mandaviya credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the country’s significant progress in sports and the introduction of several reforms.
“The Prime Minister has set a goal to take India into the top 10 sporting nations within the next decade. We have already bid to host the 2036 Olympics. By 2047, when we celebrate 100 years of independence, PM Modi envisions India among the top five sporting nations globally,” he said.
Mandaviya highlighted the government’s initiatives to nurture elite athletes. “To build a robust sports ecosystem, we launched the Target Olympic Podium Scheme. Through this, our top athletes receive world-class exposure and support, enabling them to excel with full dedication.”
The minister emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive sports ecosystem. “Prime Minister Modi has sequentially fostered a sports culture in the country. One key reform is the Sports Policy, which will advance sports infrastructure, promote sports science, improve accessibility, and ensure good governance in the sector,” he added.
He also spoke about the recently introduced Sports Governance Bill, describing it as “athlete-centric” and noting that it prioritizes women’s representation in National Sports Federations.
Mandaviya congratulated the athletes participating in the championships. “It is a proud moment for India, and particularly Ahmedabad, to host the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. This event is more than a competition—it reflects the strength and empowerment of our athletes and, by extension, our nation,” he said.
The ceremony was attended by Mohammed Hasan Jalood, president of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF); the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation chief; and Indian Weightlifting Federation president Sahdev Yadav.
Jalood praised India’s preparations for the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, calling it a “significant occasion” and commending the “outstanding organization” and “excellent infrastructure.”
