New Delhi, Dec 02: India has been invited for the first time to chair the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), marking a significant recognition of the country’s democratic credentials on the global stage. The invitation was formally extended to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, who will represent India in the role.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said the development reflects India’s growing leadership in strengthening democratic institutions worldwide. “India’s electoral experience and commitment to free and fair elections will guide our work at International IDEA. We look forward to sharing best practices and supporting democratic processes globally,” he stated.
International IDEA Secretary-General Kevin Casas-Zamora welcomed India’s chairmanship, noting that the country’s vast electoral experience makes it a valuable partner. “India’s role will bring fresh perspectives to our mission of advancing democracy and electoral integrity,” he remarked.
Officials confirmed that India’s chairmanship will focus on promoting electoral reforms, enhancing voter participation, and supporting democratic resilience in emerging economies. The initiative is expected to strengthen collaboration between India and other member states in addressing challenges to democracy.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar congratulated the Election Commission of India, highlighting that the invitation underscores India’s stature as the world’s largest democracy. “This is a proud moment for India and a testament to our democratic values,” he said.
Observers note that India’s leadership at International IDEA comes at a time when global democracies face increasing challenges from disinformation, polarization, and declining voter trust. The chairmanship is expected to enhance India’s role in shaping international dialogue on democratic governance.
