BENGALURU: India has cemented its position as a global smartphone manufacturing hub, now ranking as the world’s second-largest mobile phone producer, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Metro Yellow Line and the launch of three Vande Bharat trains, Vaishnaw credited the transformation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and pro-industry policies that have reshaped the electronics sector over the past 11 years.
Since 2014, India’s electronics output has grown sixfold to ₹12 lakh crore, while exports have surged eightfold to over ₹3 lakh crore. “A decade ago, few could imagine India emerging as a leading electronics exporter,” Vaishnaw said, underlining the scale of progress.
India has also overtaken all other nations to become the top smartphone supplier to the United States — a milestone the minister said cements the country’s role at the heart of the global smartphone supply chain.
Bengaluru, dubbed “Namma Bengaluru,” is fast becoming a major iPhone manufacturing base, attracting global tech giants, creating jobs, and fuelling innovation.
Vaishnaw said the growth reflects India’s broader goal of becoming a global technology leader through initiatives like Make in India, greater investments, and a thriving startup ecosystem. With continued focus on infrastructure and skill development, he expressed confidence the electronics sector will scale new heights and drive India’s digital future.
