NEW DELHI: Infrastructure is the backbone of a nation’s growth, and India has achieved remarkable progress in this sector, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday.

Speaking at the India Infrastructure Summit 2025, Gadkari highlighted that road infrastructure is the fastest-growing segment in the country, with 25 greenfield expressways covering 10,000 kilometres currently under development, backed by an investment of ₹5 lakh crore.

“Infrastructure drives national growth, and India has made tremendous strides in this area,” he said.

He added, “We are innovating by using city waste in road construction and promoting green fuels, electric vehicles, and the vehicle scrapping policy. Our vision is clear: development must go hand in hand with environmental sustainability. Guided by the three Ps — People, Prosperity, and Planet — we aim to build a safe, green, and globally competitive India.”

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Chief General Manager Sunil Jindal, speaking at the summit, said that over the past decade, NHAI has scaled new heights. Expenditure has increased seven-fold, construction speed has accelerated to 35 km per day, and over 50,000 km of highways across 830 projects have been completed.

“With an additional 15,000 km and 460 projects underway, our focus remains on sustainability, safety, and efficiency,” Jindal said.

He added that through innovations such as waste-to-road technology, drone-based analytics, ATMS-enabled expressways, and AI-driven construction, NHAI is building a modern, sustainable highway network aligned with India’s vision of global competitiveness and self-reliance.
