New Delhi: India is optimistic about resuming talks on the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the United States soon. Addressing the high tariffs imposed by Washington on Indian goods will be crucial to finalising the deal, a government official said on Thursday.

The official, however, noted that new dates for the next round of negotiations have not yet been set. “We are hopeful to get back on the table soon… whenever we strike a deal, both the tariffs—additional 25% and 25% on Russian oil purchases—will need to be addressed,” the official added.

Negotiations for the BTA began in March, and five rounds have been completed so far. The US team, which was scheduled to visit India from August 25 for the next round, has postponed the meeting.

Talks remain on hold as the US seeks greater market access in politically sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy, which India is reluctant to concede due to the potential impact on the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers.
