NEW DELHI, Dec 4: The Congress party on Thursday said that the strong ties between India and Russia today are a direct outcome of the Indo-Soviet partnership cemented in 1955. The party recalled that it was Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who laid the foundation of this relationship during his visit to Moscow, which later evolved into a strategic partnership spanning defence, energy and technology.

In a statement, Congress leaders highlighted that the Indo-Soviet Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation signed in 1971 further strengthened bilateral relations, ensuring mutual trust and collaboration during critical global events. They noted that the legacy of this partnership continues to shape India-Russia ties in the present day.

“The relationship between India and Russia is not accidental. It is the result of decades of engagement, beginning with Nehru’s vision in 1955 and consolidated through successive governments. The Congress party takes pride in having initiated and nurtured this bond,” the statement said.

The party underlined that Russia has remained a reliable partner for India in defence cooperation, nuclear energy projects and space exploration. It added that the ongoing annual summits between the two countries are a continuation of the framework established during the Indo-Soviet era.

Congress leaders also pointed out that the current visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India reflects the enduring nature of the relationship. They said the summit discussions on defence, energy and strategic cooperation are rooted in the trust built over seven decades.

The party emphasised that India-Russia ties are a testament to the foresight of leaders who envisioned a partnership based on equality and mutual respect. “This is a relationship that has stood the test of time and continues to serve India’s national interests,” the statement added.
