India has called for urgent reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), emphasizing that while the veto powers of permanent members require modernization, the practice of de facto veto blocking must be addressed as a priority. The statement was made during a high-level UN session on Security Council reforms.

Highlighting the need for a more representative and accountable Security Council, India pointed out that the misuse of veto powers has often stalled critical decisions on global peace and security. Officials noted that de facto vetoes, where resolutions are effectively blocked without formal veto, undermine the credibility and effectiveness of the Council.

India stressed that meaningful reform should ensure equitable participation for all member states and prevent the domination of a few permanent members in decision-making processes. The country urged the international community to focus first on eliminating practices that allow resolutions to be stalled, which, according to India, hinders timely action on pressing global issues.

Indian representatives reiterated the nation’s long-standing position that Security Council reforms are essential to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities. They called for structured dialogue among member states to arrive at solutions that enhance transparency, accountability, and fairness in Council proceedings.

The statement concluded by emphasizing that reform of the veto system should aim to strengthen the UN’s role in maintaining global peace, promoting multilateral cooperation, and ensuring that all member states have a voice in critical decisions affecting international security.
