India Calls for Urgent, Time-Bound UNSC Reforms; Reaffirms Commitment to ‘Pact for the Future’

NEW YORK: India has reiterated its call for urgent and time-bound reforms of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), while expressing strong support for the implementation and review of the Pact for the Future, a global agreement aimed at strengthening international cooperation.

Speaking during an informal dialogue on Thursday, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, underscored the need for coherence between the Pact and the work of multilateral institutions such as the G20, World Trade Organization, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund.

The Pact for the Future—adopted at the 2024 Summit of the Future—seeks to enhance global cooperation and tackle emerging and ongoing global challenges.

“We must give focused attention to critical reform areas—particularly the expansion of the Security Council and the restructuring of the international financial architecture—where progress has remained limited,” Harish said.

On Security Council reforms, he noted a broad consensus that the Council should reflect current geopolitical realities and strengthen its credibility. He also cautioned against efforts aimed at preserving the status quo.

India has long championed reforms in the UNSC, asserting that its current composition does not reflect the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century. India continues to advocate for a permanent seat at the Council.

Harish emphasized India’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure the effective execution of the Pact and its annexes. “India believes the 2028 review must be forward-looking and result-oriented,” he added during the third interactive informal dialogue on the Pact’s review.

In a symbolic gesture, Ambassador Harish also presented a Hindi translation of the Pact for the Future to UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang, as shared by India’s Permanent Mission to the UN on social media.

The Pact for the Future addresses a wide range of global issues, including peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, digital cooperation, human rights, gender equality, youth and future generations, and the reform of global governance.
