Jammu: The Indian Army has started constructing a Bailey bridge over the River Tawi in Jammu after a portion of the city’s fourth bridge was washed away earlier this week due to heavy rainfall and the swollen river, officials said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Farooq Qaiser confirmed that the incident took place on Tuesday when rising water levels caused part of the bridge to collapse.

“A portion of the fourth bridge on the Tawi river collapsed on August 26. Currently, one-way traffic has been allowed between Satwari Chowk and Asia Crossing, and restoration work is underway,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Katra, the pilgrimage town to the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, heavy rains have created misty conditions, with the Trikuta Hills remaining shrouded in clouds.

In Ramban district, MLA Arjun Singh Raju visited flood-affected families in Lower Maitra, Ward 6, and announced financial aid for protective measures. “The rainfall has damaged many houses here. While full compensation is not possible, I have decided to contribute ₹5 lakh personally and another ₹5 lakh through MNREGA for the construction of a protection wall,” he told reporters.

He further urged authorities to remain alert. “The administration needs to take advisories seriously. Both the government and administration are committed to supporting people in this difficult time,” he added.

Separately, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) launched road clearance operations in the Pir Panjal mountain range after flash floods and landslides disrupted connectivity in Rajouri district.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued weather warnings for Jammu and Kashmir. A yellow alert has been sounded for Friday in Poonch, Reasi, Rajouri, Kishtwar, and Udhampur districts, forecasting thunderstorms and lightning. For Saturday and Sunday, an orange alert has been issued for Poonch, Kishtwar, Jammu, Ramban, and Udhampur, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall.
