Poonch & Rajouri: The Indian Army observed World Environment Day with great enthusiasm and commitment to environmental conservation. The Indian Army undertook various eco-friendly initiatives across its units and forward posts in Poonch and Rajouri districts of a vast area, including forward areas of Poonch, Krishna Ghati, Bimber Gali, Mendhar, Rajouri, and Naushera. A mass plantation drive was organized, where over 12,000 saplings of non-invasive and native species were planted.
The plantation drives were not only limited to the Indian Army units but also involved local residents and Jammu and Kashmir Police. The tactical plantation drives conducted by forward posts aimed to enhance camouflage and concealment, while also augmenting the defense potential in the region. They also launched an awareness campaign on “Apashisht Mukt Sainya Abhiyaan”, emphasizing the importance of segregation of waste at source in accordance with the Government of India’s Solid Waste Management Rules. This initiative highlights the Indian Army’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting sustainable practices.
In addition to the plantation drives and awareness campaigns, the environmental competition was also organised at the Bhaderwah Girls Degree Academy. These events aimed to educate and involve local students in environmental conservation efforts. The competitions encouraged students to think creatively about environmental issues and develop innovative solutions. A significant event was the consecration of the KG Top War Memorial Annexe as “Pawan Udhyaan” in memory of Sub Maj Late Pawan Kumar. This memorial serves as a symbol of the Indian Army’s dedication to environmental conservation and its personnel’s sacrifices.
