Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Wednesday said that the decision regarding his future as a potential India head coach rests entirely with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Speaking to reporters, Gambhir emphasised that the focus must remain on the growth of Indian cricket rather than on any individual.
“Indian cricket is important, I am not,” Gambhir remarked when asked about speculation surrounding his possible appointment. He added that the responsibility of selecting the next coach is with the BCCI, and he would respect any decision taken by the board.
Gambhir, who has been widely discussed as a leading contender for the role, said that personal ambitions should always remain secondary to the broader interests of the sport. He highlighted the importance of long-term planning, strong domestic structures, and a unified vision for the national team.
The BCCI has yet to make an official announcement on the coaching position, and discussions within the cricketing fraternity continue. Meanwhile, Gambhir reiterated that Indian cricket’s progress should remain the priority, regardless of who takes charge as the next head coach.
