Jeddah: The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday expressed its sincere gratitude to Saudi authorities for rescuing an Indian national from the merchant vessel Eternity C, which sank in the Red Sea following an attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
The embassy shared the update on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the Indian national, Augustin Dassayan, was safely brought to Jizan, Saudi Arabia, along with other survivors.
“A team from the Indian Consulate in Jeddah met him, ensured his well-being, and facilitated his return to India,” the post stated.
According to Reuters, the vessel’s Greek operator, Cosmoship Management, reported that 10 crew members have been rescued so far, while 10 others are still missing.
The Eternity C is the second Greek-owned ship to be attacked and sunk by the Iran-backed Houthis within a week, part of the group’s ongoing attempts to disrupt shipping through the vital Red Sea route—crucial for global oil and trade flows.
The embassy noted that Dassayan had been working as a security guard on board and was evacuated due to the swift response by Saudi authorities.
As reported by Al Jazeera, these attacks mark a continuation of the Houthis’ campaign, which began in November 2023 in response to the Israel-Gaza conflict. Since then, over 100 ships have been targeted in operations the group claims are acts of solidarity with Palestinians.
The Red Sea has witnessed a series of similar assaults in recent months, with the Houthis targeting vessels they allege are linked to Israel, the US, or their allies.
