COLOMBO: Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha met with Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva to discuss recent developments in bilateral relations and explore opportunities for strengthening economic cooperation.
“High Commissioner Santosh Jha met JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva and discussed the recent developments in the #IndiaSriLanka partnership,” the Indian High Commission in Colombo said in a post on social media on Monday.
The two exchanged views on “the limitless potential of closer economic ties for the mutual prosperity of the people of India and Sri Lanka,” the post added.
The meeting, held at the JVP headquarters in Pelawatte, Battaramulla, also touched on the current situation in Sri Lanka, including the success of India’s housing project for displaced hill country communities, Sri Lanka Mirror reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, Silva expressed appreciation for India’s continued support, while the Indian envoy reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to further assist Sri Lanka. The discussions also covered prospective Indian investments and development aid, as well as India’s experiences in agriculture, information technology, and fisheries.
The meeting took place ahead of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya’s upcoming visit to India later in October — her first official trip to New Delhi since taking office.
In a video message released before the visit, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said: “India and Sri Lanka are bound together by history, culture, and shared values. Our relationship is deep and vital, and I look forward to strengthening our cooperation across trade, investment, education, development, and more.”
The National People’s Power (NPP), known in Sinhala as Jathika Jana Balawegaya (JJB), is the ruling alliance in Sri Lanka, comprising various political and social groups led by the JVP.
