Microsoft Edge Users Warned Of Serious Security Threat: Government Issues High-Severity Alert
The Indian government has issued a high-severity security alert for Microsoft Edge users, warning them about serious vulnerabilities that could expose their systems to hacking attempts.
The advisory, released by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) on October 15, highlights multiple flaws in the Chromium-based version of Edge that could allow attackers to bypass system security and gain access to stored data.
According to CERT-In, the vulnerabilities are linked to heap buffer overflow in Sync and use-after-free in Storage. Attackers could exploit these flaws by convincing users to visit a malicious or specially crafted website, potentially enabling remote code execution, UI spoofing, and memory corruption on the victim’s device.
These vulnerabilities affect all systems running Microsoft Edge Stable Channel (Chromium-based) versions prior to 141.0.3537.71 — including both individuals and organizations using Windows PCs.
How To Stay Protected: Update Microsoft Edge Now
Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and released a fix. To ensure your browser is secure, follow these steps to update Edge:
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the three-dot menu (top-right corner).
- Go to Help and Feedback → About Microsoft Edge.
- The browser will automatically check for and install the latest version.
- Restart Edge for the update to take effect.
Given the high severity of the threat, users are strongly advised to update immediately to prevent potential exploits and safeguard their systems.
