Indian Government Issues High-Severity Warning for Chrome Users on Windows and Mac

Security concerns around Google Chrome are becoming increasingly frequent, prompting the Indian government to issue a fresh alert for users.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) released a high-severity advisory on October 8, 2025, warning that serious vulnerabilities in Chrome could allow hackers to bypass security protections and steal sensitive information. The alert applies to Chrome users on Windows, macOS, and Linux, urging immediate action.

According to CERT-In, the vulnerabilities affect multiple components within Chrome, including Heap buffer overflow in Sync, Use after free in Storage, and Out of bounds read in WebCodecs. Attackers could exploit these flaws by tricking users into visiting malicious websites, allowing them to take control of affected systems or extract private data.

While security advisories for Chrome are not uncommon, the browser’s widespread use makes such vulnerabilities a major concern. Millions of users depend on Chrome, making it a frequent target for cybercriminals.

Who Is at Risk?

The advisory specifies that the following versions are affected:

  • Google Chrome versions prior to 141.0.7390.65/.66 for Windows and Mac
  • Google Chrome versions prior to 141.0.7390.65 for Linux

Both individual users and organizations are at risk, as attackers may target both personal and business systems.

What You Should Do

CERT-In advises all users to update Chrome immediately to the latest version. Here’s how:

  1. Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
  2. Navigate to Help → About Google Chrome.
  3. Chrome will automatically check for updates and install the latest version.

With Chrome moving further into the AI-driven web ecosystem, concerns around data privacy and security are growing. Experts warn that ignoring updates can leave millions of users even more vulnerable to cyberattacks.
